FORGED IN THE GARAGE: ADRIAN VISSER’S XJ

Welcome to the very first installment of our Showcase Series. At TorqueXChange, we live by a simple mantra: Built Not Bought. While anyone can swipe a card for a showroom floor model, it takes a different breed of enthusiast to spend late nights in a garage, knuckles bloodied, chasing the perfect setup.
Our inaugural feature belongs to Adrian Visser and his epic, fully restored, and heavily modified Jeep Cherokee XJ. This isn’t just a 4×4, it’s a masterclass in iterative engineering and South African “maak-’n-plan” ingenuity.

The Philosophy: Iterative Engineering
This XJ wasn’t built from a catalog. It evolved through years of “beg, borrow, and steal” combinations, trial and error, and the occasional breakdown that led to a better design. As Adrian puts it, this Jeep represents the reality of the trail: you build, you break, you refine, and you repeat.
Suspension & Lift: 5.5 Inches of Custom Grit
The stance on this XJ is aggressive, sitting at approximately 5.5 inches of lift. But look closer, and you’ll see a “bastardized” setup that actually works:
- Front: Rusty’s 4×4 4.5” coils paired with Teraflex JK shocks. Because a JK is factory-taller than an XJ, these shocks provide massive travel.
- Custom Geometry: The upper and lower control arms are fully custom. The track bar and pitman arm? Fabricated from roll cage tubing.
- Steering: After “chewing up” heim joints on a crossover setup, Adrian reverted to a reinforced custom Y-link.
- The “Luggage” Mod: The rear features drop and relocation shackles imported from the USA—the proper way—in a buddy’s luggage.
- Rear Leafs: A hybrid “Frankenstein” pack consisting of XJ and Hilux leaves for the perfect balance of flex and load carrying.

Footwork: Maxxis Razr & A-Line
To put the power down, Adrian runs 33×12.5 R15 Maxxis Razr MTs on second-hand A-Line 15×8 rims.
“The side walls are firm, but they float beautifully on sand, dig into mud, and have stupid amounts of grip on the rocks.” — Adrian Visser
Drivetrain: Defying the “Dana” Haters
Internet experts love to hate on the Dana 30 (Front) and Dana 35 (Rear) combo, but Adrian has proven them wrong. With only one side shaft failure under heavy abuse, these axles have stood the test of time thanks to a major “drivetrain reset”.
With the help of Charl from Rockspider 4×4 and a few brandies, the diffs were stripped and rebuilt in a single day with 4.56 gear ratios to perfectly compensate for the 33″ tires. Every seal, bearing, and bolt was replaced to ensure reliability in the dunes.
Armor & Fabrication: Form Follows Function
The protection on this Jeep is 100% bespoke:
- Bumpers: Custom-made by BOC in Malmesbury.
- The Tub Cut: The rear features a tub cut with an integrated scrub bar to keep the body panels safe when the Jeep is leaning hard over rocks.
- Fenders: When the 33s started rubbing, Adrian didn’t buy plastic flares he fabricated custom metal fenders in a single afternoon.

Overland Ready: The Roof & The Heart
The roof rack, repurposed from a Mobi Lodge Mobi X adventure trailer, is a functional hub carrying a Bushwakka awning, sand tracks, a Hi-Lift jack, and Hella spotties for 360-degree visibility.
Under the hood sits the legendary 4.0L Straight-Six. Knowing XJ’s run hot, Adrian overhauled the cooling system with a DB Customs radiator, a custom-made in-house cowl, and a heavy-duty viscous fan to ensure the dunes never claim his engine.
The Final Word
Adrian’s XJ is the embodiment of the TorqueXChange spirit. It’s a vehicle built with intention, maintained with passion, and driven with zero fear.
